Hi Bridget,

One thing to note is that many of the companies that hire independent contractors for both medical and non-medical transcription pay by the job rather than by the hour - so that the faster you type and the better your command of language and editing, the more you will make per hour. This is especially true for folks looking for part-time, supplemental income from home, who may not get hit quite so hard with taxes.

20k may not be worth it to you. But it may be to others. So it all depends on the person. But thanks for sharing your opinion.

I looked into medical transcription from home, it only pays about $14 to $20 per hour and you would be a 1099 employee which means self employed. So take away taxes (higher than W2 employee because the government taxes self-employed more) and insurance from that amount and you will be lucky if you make $20,000 a year. Plus you need to be able to type at least 80 words per minute and pay a few thousand dollars for the 6 month certification program. It doesn't seem to be worth all that for $20k a year.

Sarah,
Thanks for the additional information. Sounds like you've gained a lot of experience at MTurk. Do you want to write an article providing tips or advice you can give to folks
so they get the most out of Mturk? If so let me know.

Hi Eddy,

Thanks for the reply - I do think mturk is one great source of entry-level transcription work to gain experience, and learn the right way to transcribe properly. You'll also get access to a lot of style manuals that will help you. Also check out the Turker worker message board at http://turkers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=shame to see feedback about good versus bad employers. The only downside I've experienced at mturk is that you're trusting the requesters on the site to approve your work and pay you. Large established companies like SpeechInk seem to be good bets.

Sarah,

Thank you for coming back and sharing your success story. I really appreciate it and wish more folks would take the time to do so. Mturk ( www.workathomenoscams.com/2008/07/29/work-at-home-with-amazoncom/ ) is a consistent winner for most people on this site so I'm not surprised. By the way I don't really hate typing or data entry jobs. I just dislike when folks limit themselves to it because it usually leads to scams or products misrepresenting themselves. But when legit opportunities do arise, then I'm all for it and Mturk seems to have a lot of them.

In terms of transcription, trust me I know it's more than straight typing otherwise any Joe schmoe can do it. But that's why it requires training and experience to get a job in the field. But it sounds like Mturk may be the spot for folks to do this. So thanks for sharing your success story and knowledge. I'm sure it's going to help a lot of people.

Here's a success story about Eddy's website for you guys! I left a career in I.T. management (and all the related stress) last year to start a part-time business from home. As you all can imagine, business has been slow and I need to supplement my income. I have a lot of experience with business writing and editing, and fast typing speed so my goal was to get a transcription job, even though my transcription experience is limited. I applied to many companies and aced their online tests, but didn't hear back. Eddy, I know you aren't a fan of the typing jobs!

But here's my success story: I learned about Amazon's mturk program (www.mturk.com) through this site! Thanks Eddy! If you sign up and search on HIT's with the word "transcription" you'll find a lot of jobs there. You can find jobs that pay base rate about $1 and offer bonuses for good work. If your typing is fast and accurate and your command of language is great, you can complete many of these tasks within an hour and earn close to what you'd be earning with a more tranditional remote transcription job. Best of all, you'll be banking that coveted "experience" every remote employer seems to demand before hiring permanent employees, understandably so. Also, I've found some fun writing jobs on mturk that don't pay a whole lot, but if you do well you might get a bonus from the employer and they'll keep your mind active while you're looking! Thanks again Eddy, what a GREAT lead.

Here's my final plug for transcription, Eddy maybe I can persuade you: transcription is more than just "typing" - it also requires some interpretation and editing. If you're typing something you find interesting like a lecture on a subject you enjoy, a news article, or a medical conference, you're engaging your brain and learning something. Some companies offer growth opportunities for transcriptionists over time which can include editing and writing, if that's your thing. Thanks again for this site, it's a real find!
