Hello All. I'm back. Sorry I've been MIA. Obviously it's been hard to focus on work considering the tragedy going on in my homeland. Fortunately by the grace of God and your prayers, all of my family members are alive. This is wonderful news for me but it still deeply saddens me to see what's happening in Haiti.

That being said, you know I try to stay positive in the face of adversity and have always encouraged you to do the same.  So I'm taking a bit of my own advice. I've been viewing this tragedy as fresh start for my homeland which obviously had a troubled past. Although the ground continues to shake in Haiti, I know that the country will be better in the future. I'm confident that this will happen because of the financial, spiritual and emotional outpouring of folks like you and the world. So that's what I focus on. I don't bother watching the negative reports on the news because ultimately I don't think it helps the cause. 

What I focus on is the miracles of rescue and survival which don't get the same spot light as the hate being spewed or the other peripheral nonsense being reported on. I would encourage you to do the same. Continue to pray and support in any way you can. Don't get sucked into the hype. 

Finally, I just want to say thanks again for the folks that sent prayers, dollars, food, clothes and love to my brethren in Haiti. This tragedy truly re-affirmed my belief that we can come together for a common good regardless of race, sex, religion or political beliefs. Because at the end of the day we're all human beings and that's pretty much all that matters. So thanks again!

As some of you may or may not know, I am a Haitian American. A lot of my family was fortunate enough to come to the states and make a better lives for themselves. I'm obviously a product of that. However I have a lot of family members and brethren that are still back home and have obviously been impacted by this disastrous event. 

My homeland was already impoverished with a weak infrastructure. But you add a natural disaster like this and the impact is beyond comprehension. At the time of this post, the communication lines are pretty much non existent. So we haven't been able to get in contact with other family members.  We're basically totally in the dark about their conditions. The only thing we do know is that they have definitely been impacted since they live in Port Au Prince. 

Why should you care?

I share this with you because you may think the situation in Haiti is far removed from you. But now you know it's not. The person that has helped you avoid scams and find various legitimate ways of working at home for the past several years is Haitian. The stranger that has taken time to answer your comments and share encouragement with you is Haitian. The person that has brought a smile to your face or caused you to laugh out loud is Haitian. 

So if you feel that any of these things are worth anything, I'm asking that you do me a favor. Please try to help some people that you may not know but need your help desperaterly. I know times our rough here in the states but if you can find it in your hearts to make any type of donations to organizations that are assisting in the Haiti Earthquake Relief, your buddy here would really appreciate it. 

It's when events like this happen you realize how fortunate we all are to have a stable governement, solid infrastructure, shelter, funds, foods and various organizations that can help in disastrous situations.  But other "3rd world" countries like Haiti don't have this luxury. So I hope you can find it in your hearts and wallets to help some of my brethren out as I have helped many of you here on this blog for years.

It appears that most of my family members in Haiti are accounted for and safe. So thank you for your prayers because it obviously helped. But obviously my extended brethren aren't doing well. So I ask that you continue your prayers but more importantly take action. Haiti is often ignored and forgotten. Don't allow this to happen especially now. Encourage everyone you know donate or give to some of the organizations listed above. Keep the pressure on so that these folks get the help and support they need to survive this tragedy and to rebuild. Thanks.

When I first started in the work at home industry one of the jobs I assumed was available in great numbers was, stuffing envelopes assembly and craft work at home. However I quickly discovered most of these so called "jobs" were scams. The few times I could find a legitimate company, it was almost impossible to make money with them because you would never seem to meet their so called "high standards".

Truth be told, I don't even know why I even considered looking into these opportunities. The extent of my handiness is picking up the telephone to call my uncle-in-law to fix stuff around the house or build something. Thank God for my saviness with computers and technology, otherwise I'd be totally useless to my wife and most of my family members.

In any event, like typing and data entry, I pretty much gave up on the craft work at home pipe dream and moved on to bigger and better things as you already know. But I always wondered if there was a legitimate way to make money with arts, crafts and all things hand made. Well, I think I may have found one that may fit the bill known as Etsy.com So if you're the type of person that makes jewelry, paints, creates crafts, scrap books, other knick knacks, etc., then you might want to kick back and read this article.

However if you're like me and don't have a creative bone in your body, you can pass on this article. You might just want to head to my work at home companies page to find a traditional work at home job.

What is Etsy.com?

Basically it's an online marketplace where people can buy hand made and unique products from folks that create and make this stuff. So if you're the creative type that is always making stuff then this is the place you want to be to find folks that are willing to pay for your talent. 

How does Etsy.com work?

Since we're discussing how you can make money with this site, I'll walk through the steps of how you sell your items on Etsy.

1. Register for a free account.

2. Confirmation your registration by checking your email and follow the directions in the email.

3. Log into your Etsy account and create a shop.

4. Upload images and descriptions of the crafts you want to sell. 

5. Place your products in a category that closely matches what you're selling.

6. Then choose your shipping and payment options.

7. Preview your items and fix any problems you may spot.

8. Publish your ad and your item is now visible for the world to see on Etsy.com

9. If someone purchases your item, Etsy collects 3-5% of your profits. This is on top of the .20 charged per each item you list. 

10. You ship the item and everyone is happy. 

Obviously I've over simplified the process. There are some other nuiances that need to be covered for you to succeed at selling your crafts on Etsy.com that I'll cover later in this article. 

The Pros of Etsy.com

So you may be wondering why is Etsy.com so special? Why couldn't I just sell my handmade stuff on ebay or a yard sale? You could, but you would probably fare better at Etsy.com, because the buyers are targeted and you're competing against other hand made items. To some people this is far better than competing against mass produced items. Some of the other advantages of Etsy are as follows:

1. Your Items are listed for 4 months at a time.
2. You can upload 5 photos for each listing for free
3. Payments through PayPal (That may actually be a con to some folks.)
4. There is no confusing auction. If you've tried to sell on ebay you know why this is important. 
5. Etsy submits your store to Google and Froogle search engines. (This can lead to a lot more eyeballs than you would get at a yard sale.)

The Cons of Etsy.com

Obviously like any company Etsy.com has its flaws. It doesn't necessarily make it a bad company. But it's something you should be aware of to better your chances at success and avoid any issues. So here are a few complaints against Etsy.

1. Competition:

Although Etsy is not as big as ebay (which is a good thing), it's still a huge marketplace with literally thousands of vendors offering similar items. This obviously means more competition for you as a seller. In order to be competitive, sellers are usually left with little choice but to lower their prices or offer sales.

Honestly I don't really view this as a negative but I know it's one that people whine about. Look, competition is part of life and goes with being in business for yourself. Without competition this country wouldn't be where it is. So it comes with the territory and you need to be able to adjust accordingly. Even if you weren't in business for yourself you're dealing with competition at work, family members, spouse, etc. 

2. Difficulty Getting Visibility:

Because Etsy is pretty extensive it can make it very difficult to get your shop and your products noticed by potential buyers. Etsy tries to level the playing field by featuring "random" items from various sellers on the front page. But this isn't really consistent. Apparently on various occasions, the same sellers are featured repeatedly within a short period of time.

Ideally the front page should be a true rotating system that gives every seller a shot at some shine. However that doesn't seem to be the case when popular sellers dominate. 

3. Limited Store Customization:

There aren't a lot of bells and whistles to make your store stand apart from the competition. It's basically a template that all sellers must use and can adjust some minor things. Imagine if all the stores in your mall looked the same. How likely would you be to visit more than one or two? So this is definitely a serious gripe that has merit.

Tips To Make More Money With Etsy.com

One of the easiest things about Etsy.com is getting set up. But as I mentioned in the cons, selling your stuff is a whole other ball game. Here are some tips that may help you do better at Etsy.com.

1. Instead of cutting your prices, try offering a bonus or highlighting what makes your product better than the others. Informercials are notorious for doing this and why we've all ended up buying at least one product from a tv informercial. And you know you have. lol

2. Etsy offers a paid showcase spots for individual categories. This basically allegedly gives your items more prominence in a given category. Or it should in theory. But most have claimed it was a waste of money.  A better way to get more exposure is as follows. Instead of throwing up 10 items up for sale at once, it’s to your advantage to spread them out over a few days. You see, every time you put up a new item, it appears briefly on the front page. Then it gets added to the “recently listed items” page. When buyers browse through items, the most recently listed ones are shown first. So by placing a new item every couple of days or at various times, your shop will be seen by far more people and more frequently. You’ll basically be listed with the most recent items which may increase your sales. It's a little time consuming but it may literally pay off.

3. When setting up your Etsy store it's very much like Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Be sure you select a name that describes what you're selling. Enter keywords and descriptions that represent your products not your ego. This isn't the time to be cute and name your store Big Poppa's Store when you're selling hand made cat hair wallets. (Yes there are people that make this. lol) Name your store, Cat Hair Wallets. Describe what your type of cat hair wallets you make, use cats in the keywords, etc. Think like the people that you want to buy your items and that will help you make more sales. I don't have any products to sell but I use this all the time as an affiliate marketer and it works wonderfully.

Obviously no it's not. Like many of the companies I discuss on this blog, it will have weaknesses that will turn some people off. I've yet to find an opportunity that has satisifed everyone. Happy Holidays All. I hope you've been spending quality time with your family. I definitely have. But I pulled away a little time to get some work done. So 2009 is quickly coming to an end. I would dare to say that is the year that everyone wants to forget. Obviously the economy had a great deal to do with this sentiment. While most folks were cutting back, scammers were hard at work if you can call it that! Apparently misery and despair is like Christmas for con artists. So in the spirit of letting go of the past and looking forward to a better new year, I've compiled a list of the top 5 work from home scams of 2009. There is a saying that goes the past often repeats itself. This is particularly true with scams. Con artists may change some of the bells and whistles but they tend to have the same patterns. So study this list so you avoid crap like it in 2010.

1. Google Money Scams

This is basically a scam where shady marketers were misrepresenting affiliate marketing as some type of easy job with Google. Ridiculous promises of easy money working for Google, low shipping costs  with hidden exorbitant fees were also common with this scam. It caused a lot of uproar for Google because people assumed that Google was behind it. But eventually they couldn't ignore all the bad publicity associated with the confusion and pulled such misleading ads and websites from their search engine. Later they delivered the final blow and sued some of the biggest names associated with this scam. But con artists are persistent bunch. They have already adapted and are playing on other known search engine's such as Yahoo and Bing. So if you see some Bing work at home opportunity, chances are it's probably the same misleading product and Microsoft has nothing to do with it. It's like the saying goes, same crap different day. 2. Fake Newspaper Article Scams

This is pretty much the same scam described above but with a twist of lime. When folks started becoming wise to the scam artist's nonsense, they had to adapt. Roaches do the same thing. So they created hundreds of fake news websites that featured so called news articles about working at home and how their shady Google work at home product was highly recommended.  Often times you would see the logos of legitimate news agencies on their website with the catch phrase as seen on… The thing is these companies were never featured on the actual news programs. Many times they just happen to be sponsors when those shows aired. And those so called news articles were all fake and simply very deceptive advertisements designed to hoodwink you into buying any of the garbage Google Make Money products. They've modified some of these fake news articles to promote some other work at home offer. But at the end of the day if they're still using such deceptive practices to get you into their program, what does it really say about their opportunity? (Related articles: Fake News Sites)

3. Check Cashing/Wire Transfer Scams

This is basically a variation of the Nigerian email scams. Con artists would basically post a fake job listing often time which was very elaborate and may even use a legitimate company's name or job description.  Or they may search legitimate job site for resumes so they can find new victims . No matter how they packaged the job, eventually they would mention something about cashing a check or wiring money. Everything prior to that may sound as real as any job. But once the mention of cashing checks or wiring money is put into the equation all bets were off. Chances are you're probably being set up for this scam.  Eventually the victim would cash the check and be told to keep a percentage of the money. Then they would be informed find by their bank that the check was fake and all their money was withdrawn from their personal accounts. Ouch! 4. Package Forwarding Scams

The scam artists are often lazy but clever. When they see something works, they adjust it to scam even more people.  Since the fake check scam worked so well, they modified the principle of a fake job listing. Instead of wiping your checking account clean, they're using you so that they can get stolen consumer products to their homes.  Basically the scammers would post a job for a shipping assistant or something to that effect. Your so-called job was to receive consumer products open the contents, "ensure" everything was in order, then forward the package to another address which was a P.O. Box address. Next thing you know you're getting a knock on your door from the postal inspector and being accused of theft or possession of stolen goods. Basically the scam artist has stolen someone's credit card information.Then they've purchased a whole bunch of stuff with it. But instead of shipping it to their home where they'll be caught. They send the product to you and have you ship it to a P.O. Box which is not traceable. They get a whole bunch of free stuff and you get hosed. Sometimes the scam artists will actually send you some money to do this. This leads you to believe that this "job" is legitimate. However it's not. They can afford to send a few bucks your way because they'll probably sell the stolen items for a great price to some unsuspecting customer. (Related articles: Package Forwarding)

5. Forced Continuity /  Hidden Negative Option Scams

Most of the so called Google work at home opportunity employed the "marketing technique" I'm about to discuss. It worked so well that it spread to various other work at home related products. So how does it work? Basically you pay a small shipping fee for a given work at home kit, dvd, ebook, training or whatever. It's can range from $1.99 – $4.99. It's specifically designed to be insignificant so you feel you have nothing to really lose. When you fork over your credit card information, there is usually some terms and services that everyone ignores or fails to read completely. In that the sea of text is usually a line that basically signs your life away. Or at the very least it reads that you'll be signed up for other nonsensical services that will probably be priced anywhere from $39.99 to $99.99 within 7 days. By the way, it's not a full 7 days. They usually count the second you sign up as the first day. So $1.99 turns out to be 8 times that because you failed to read the fine print. 

Honestly it's a shady practice but a big reason that it works is because we fail to read things. So we're a big part of the problem. I see it happen all the time on this blog. People ask me how can I find a work at home job. It's a ridiculous question because there are links all over the site linking to a solution. I now ignore those comments because it's clear folks aren't reading and that's a recipe for disaster.  On my site the most you may lose for failing to read is your feelings and some great ways to make money. Outside my site you may end up losing up to $100 bucks or more. So the lesson here is R.I.F. (Reading is fundamental) By the way some companies do very legitimate trial offers where they're very clear as to what will happen after the period is over. They don't bury it in the fine print. They'll even email you a few days in advance to let you know you're about to be charged the higher fee. That's the way it should be done. These companies are confident enough in their products where they don't feel they need to trick you into staying on. So keep this in mind. I don't want everyone now thinking that all companies that charge these low trial fees are all scams. They're not. (Related articles: Google Money Tree Scam)

Conclusion

So there you have it, my top 5 work at home scams of 2009. Please note this list was not really compiled by any scientific methods. It should be interesting what 2010 brings in the way of scams. However if you follow the simple steps in my work at home scams video, you'll probably be able to avoid most of them. I didn't fall for any of this year's scams and that's purely because I followed the steps in my scam video.  So feel free to watch that work at home scams video when you have that question "Is company x a scam?". At the end of the day let the past be the past. Don't harp on all the mistakes or negative things that happened this past year. Instead, why not learn from them? If you were laid off from your job in 2009 then in 2010 work on getting some new career skills or starting your own business. If some jerk dumped you in 09, thank him or her. Now in 2010 find someone that will appreciate and love you the way you deserve. If someone you loved went to be with the Lord in 09, remember them in 2010 by appreciating every moment of life and spending more quality time with the loved ones that are still here. If you experienced any set backs, be thankful for them. Now you know what not to do in 2010. Take responsibility of your life. Don't wait on "bailouts" or for someone else to improve your life. You control your life and what it can be. Don't complain about things that didn't work out. Pick yourself up, dust your shoulders off and keep coming back for more. You can never lose if you don't give up on yourself. You have to be your biggest cheerleader. Don't wait for affirmation or approval from others, motivate yourself because at the end of the day you're in control!

The New Year is time for a fresh start. Actually every day is an opportunity for a new start. Keep that in mind in 2010. If you didn't like how your life turned out this past year then don't repeat the same steps! It's that simple. Try something different that you didn't do in 09. Otherwise you're bound to repeat the past. See you in 2010. I believe it's going to be your best year yet! But do you believe that?
