Is Checkout 51 A Scam Or Actually Legit?

Links & ads you may click on this blog pay the bills & keep this site free for you. Thanks for supporting!

Is checkout 51 a scam or legit?Earlier in the year I wrote an Ibotta Review which was basically about a smartphone app that paid you for grocery shopping. Many of you seemed to like the idea. But for some people, this opportunity wasn't viable because you actually needed to live in modern times and have a smartphone to make money with that program. LOL Fortunately Checkout 51 feels your pain.

Well if you were one of those folks that had a “dumb” phone but wanted to take advantage of getting paid to shop for grocery, you'll love my Checkout 51 Review below. Fortunately they understand that some of you don't have or want a smartphone and prefer to use smoke signals and pigeons to communicate to others. (I kid, I kid. LOL)

What is Checkout 51?

Checkout 51 is a coupon website that has been around since 2012 that pays you cash back for grocery shopping without the annoying coupon cutting. They also offer an app that pays you for your grocery shopping as well but it's optional. Did you know sites like Swagbucks.com, Inboxdollars.com and Fusioncash.net can pay you for downloading apps like checkout51? Now you do.

Either way with Checkout 51 you're earning cash back for certain grocery shopping that you do which is explained down below. But don't expect to make a lot of money. If you want to earn a real part-time or full-time income, you should check out my #1 Free Work At Home Recommendation.

How Does Checkout 51 Work?

First sign up for Checkout 51 by clicking here. It's totally free.

How Checkout 51 Works

1. Every Thursday visit the Checkout 51 website or app to see what products you need to buy to earn cash back.

2. Head to any grocery store you choose and start your shopping.

3. When you get home use your phone or computer to upload your grocery shopping receipt.

4. Checkout 51 will process your receipt and tell you how much money you've made.

5. Once you've reached $20 and clicked the cash out button, we'll mail your check.

If you don't want to deal with receipts and still make money for shopping or doing other things online, you should “check out” Inboxdollars.com, Swagbucks.comSurveyjunkie.com, and Fusioncash.net. Pun intended.

When do I get paid?

Checkout 51 mails you a check once you've reached $20.

What I Like About Checkout 51!

Smartphone not required!

Unlike Ibotta you don't need a smartphone to make money. As long as you have access to a computer and can scan or take a picture of your receipt and then upload it to the Checkout 51 website you can make money with this opportunity. So this literally opens this opportunity to a lot more people.

Shop at any store.

Unlike Ibotta that limited you to certain stores you can shop at any store you like and not just ones affiliated with Checkout 51. This is great for people that may do a lot of their grocery shopping in stores that may not be a big brand like your local bodega. Only some of you will understand that bodega reference. LOL

$500 Contest

Apparently if you spend at least $60 in groceries, you can win $500. This can be any type of groceries not just the items listed on the Checkout 51 website or app for cash back. All you need to do is upload any grocery receipt that is over $60 and you'll be entered to win!

Checkout 51 Complaints

Not International

Unfortunately Checkout 51 only works in the United States and Canada. Initially it was only in Canada but eventually opened up in the United States. So maybe as the company grows it will enter other markets. But for now my international brothers and sisters won't be able to take advantage of this opportunity. But you can visit my international work at home page for other options in your area.

Check please?

Sadly Checkout 51 doesn't seem to offer paypal as a payment option. You're limited to check payments only at this time. This means you have to wait until they mail the check, then you have to trek out to the bank to deposit the check. Then you'll need to wait until it clears. That's just too many unnecessary steps in this day and age. They should have direct deposit or a paypal option. Fortunately,  Swagbucks.com, Inboxdollars.comFusioncash.net, and Surveyjunkie.com all offer multiple of ways to get paid that are fast.

Sharing is not caring…

As a trained affiliate marketer, I love any opportunity that allows me to get paid to share other great companies or ways to make money. It's usually a win win for everyone. Unfortunately Checkout 51 doesn't seem to have a referral program like Ibotta offers. This is unfortunate because it can really help the company spread the word and it would have been added way to make money for their members.

Limited income potential.

I'm a huge fan of multiple streams of income even if it's a little income at a time. I feel it all adds up. But for those people that are looking for opportunities that can pay some major bills or allow you to work at home full time, then Checkout 51 isn't going to be the answer for you. You'll only be able to earn some extra income with this company.

If you're looking to make some “real” income, I would suggest checking out one my top suggestions:

My Top Free Work At Home Recommendation

So is Checkout 51 legit?

Yes it's definitely a legitimate company and people are earning extra money with this opportunity. It's perfect for people that want to get paid for something they already do and for anyone that liked Ibotta but didn't have a smartphone. So I feel confident in recommending Checkout 51 to you guys.

Again you won't be able to support yourself or family with this company, you'll need to check out my #1 Free Work At Home Recommendation for that. Or you may also want to give ShopKick a shot as well since it also pays you for grocery shopping. Either way Checkout 51 is still worth adding to your mix of multiple streams of income. If you want to learn about other apps that pay you, check out this article.

I hope you enjoyed my Checkout 51 review, if you want to read more reviews like this you should follow the lead of many other great work at home seekers and become a subscriber by clicking here.  You can also follow me on social networks like, FacebookTwitter or Google +.

Talk to you soon.

I keep on getting an email telling me that my account will be inactive in August, and I will be charged every month it is inactive. I have never even signed up to use this service, and would not anyway. When I tried to go to the website and sign in, the website told me I did not have an account on file. I have no idea what to do. Very frustrating.

Tommy E - July 2, 2017 Reply

I use both the Ibotta app and Checkout 51. I start by saying that while I can earn alot more money through Checkout 51 my draw back is getting paid. When I downloaded the app a few months ago there was an option for a Paypal payment which I chose, I have been trying for a month or better now to get my payment from them via Paypal. I received an email stating that my payment had gone unclaimed which I know I did not receive, so my money was put back into my account. I contacted support and was told to do another payout to which I have and I continue to wait as it takes 5-15 business days to do a Paypal transaction???? Ibotta uses Paypal and I get payment within 1 minute (yes 60 seconds), so while Checkout 51 has more rebates Ibotta pays out lightyears faster.

    Eddy Salomon - July 2, 2017 Reply

Tommy thanks for sharing your real experience. I guess this is why ibotta still leads in this space.

Barbiea - June 26, 2017 Reply

I use Ibotta and Checkout 51 and also MobiSave and Saving Star. Occasionally they have rebates for the same products on 2 or more of them. Also I recently purchased an item for $11.50, I had store coupon for $4, and another $4 on one of these and another for $2 rebate. Not sure of the exact totals, I just know I ended up paying $1.50 for the product that costs $11.50.

I have found that lately Checkout 51 has a lot more rebates available than in the past, and they have more items I can find in my store, or would be likely to buy. Ibotta has more items for rebates, but a lot of them are not available in my part of the country, or things I have no desire to purchase. Mobisave has some good rebates. They also have several where they may pay 10 cents for any brand of bread or of milk or other items, but they do have a few that pay a greater amount. SavingStar has different way of doing it. You register your store card, and look at the app from SavingsStar. You will see some where you get money back for buying 1 or 4 of the same thing, sometimes you have to buy 4 to get the rebate. And some will give you the rebate for just purchasing 1. You don’t have to send any photos of your receipts, since you registered your store card (such as Walmart or my local grocery), I don’t have to do anything. But so far I haven’t collected my rebate. At SavingStar, I have a current balance of $14 in rebates, in checking how to redeem, it appears I can select to have it go onto my store card to deduct next time I shop. I have collected just over $14 from MobiSave, and it automatically goes into my PayPal account each time. With Checkout 51 I currently have earned more that $90, and have not had any problem collecting my money, You may need to wait until you have at least $20 before redeeming. I currently have $27 to redeem, and it can go directly into my PayPal account also, or be mailed, as I choose. With Ibotta, I have lifetime earning of $236, and have $45 available right now to redeem. I am just now redeeming it, directly into my PayPal account. You must have $20 or more to redeem.

Hopefully this is helpful for others.

    Hey Barbiea,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m actually familiar with all of the companies you’ve mentioned because we’ve actually reviewed them all.
But it’s great to hear how you’ve successfully used them and your preferences. Thanks again for sharing!

Lucy - March 23, 2017 Reply

I’m curious what kind of products does Checkout 51 require you to buy? I don’t buy ANY processed food, just mostly fresh produce. Don’t use coupons, either.

Sarah - March 13, 2017 Reply

Can I upload more than one receipt per week?

    Eddy Salomon - March 14, 2017 Reply

I’m not sure if that has changed. You should visit their site for more info on that.

Joan - February 15, 2017 Reply

How do you rack up the $20.00? Is it equal to the amount of the coupon? No one has addressed this and there is no information explaining this on either web site.

    Eddy Salomon - February 15, 2017 Reply

Joan this was explained in the how does checkout 51 works above. I’m not sure how you missed it. But again the premise is you go shopping upload your receipts and depending on what you buy you earn cash back. So let’s say this week they’re paying you $.50 for milk and another $.50 for bread you purchased. That means you’ve earned a total of $1. Every week you upload new receipts you’ll earn more based on what you buy. Once you’ve reached $20 you can cash out. Although this may have changed since this review but that’s how these shopping apps work. You’re just getting paid for what you already do.

Melissa - January 13, 2017 Reply

I signed up for ibotta and checkout 51 at the same time, I think it was last July, and I’ve already made over $60 with ibotta and haven’t even made enough with Checkout 51 to get a check from them yet! I’m up to only $11 in the same amount of time. They simply don’t have enough offers available. But today I’m unhappy because yesterday I submitted an item that I had also used a coupon for, something I do with ibotta all the time. And I get an email this AM, saying it was rejected because I had used a coupon. I assumed it would be like ibotta and I could do both. So who knows how long it’ll take me to even earn the $20 needed to get a check. Once that happens, I’ll be done. I’m sticking with ibotta and coupons.com.

    Eddy Salomon - January 13, 2017 Reply

Hey Melissa, thanks for sharing. It seems like many people are experiencing this with Checkout 51. It looks Ibotta is still the best. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Joel - December 21, 2016 Reply

Checkout 51 is full of crap! Bjs have two different memberships. I got the $50 (Inner circle) one as shown for $40 on a special. Now they dont want to pay up. Someone please show me where it says you have to pay $50. Thats like saying they have a dollar rebate on an item and i have to buy it at the store that cost $10 more. I thought saving was the name of the game?

Susan Franklin - November 14, 2016 Reply

I absolutely despise Checkout 51. Ibotta is user friendly, and I love using it. However, Checkout 51 is a racket! I have to email and basically fight for every quarter I earn though their site. I bought one of their toothpaste items from Wal-Mart and was told that I had used a coupon (which I had not.) I had to send THREE emails about Wal-Mart discounting the price to receive my meager $.75 credit. Now they tell me that my Eggland’s Best eggs are not on my receipt. Yet another multiple email exchange for $.50. Here we go again…

    Eddy Salomon - November 15, 2016 Reply

    Hey Susan,

Sorry to hear about your poor experience with Checkout51.

Tommy - November 12, 2016 Reply

I downloaded the app and started saving right away so far i have not had a problem with uploading or anything so i jave nothi g complain about right now and the have it now if you tell a friend about them you can earn an extra dollar on certain products

    Eddy Salomon - November 13, 2016 Reply

    Hey Tommy,
I’m glad you enjoy it. You should look into ibotta as well. They tend to be better and have a better referral program that isn’t as limited.

Courtney - October 27, 2016 Reply

I love Checkout51 and Ibotta. It has taken me quite a while to earn my first check with Checkout51 but and extra $20 here in there adds up! I am depositing my first check today, and hopefully I have no problems with it. I work at a Credit Union so I am going to have them put a hold on the check just in case. But from the research I have done it seems to be a legit bank. The routing number is correct with the company and address which is a good sign. Has anyone had trouble with their checks bouncing??

    Eddy Salomon - October 28, 2016 Reply

I’m glad you like it. These apps are definitely good to add a little extra money back in your pocket. I don’t think I’ve heard any complaints of checks bouncing with this company.

Colleen - October 24, 2016 Reply

Was going to try out Checkout 51 but after your write up and all the negative comments think I’lol give ibotta a try instead!! Much thanks!!!

    Eddy Salomon - October 24, 2016 Reply

Ibotta has definitely been in the forefront when it comes to this app. So I don’t blame you. Let me know how you do with it.

BIG SCAM..I’VE BEEN WAITING SINCE JULY 2016 FOR MY CHECK THEY SAID THE MAILED, WHENEVER I ASK ABOUT I GET BOGUS RESPONSES, I REQUESTED IT 3 TIMES ALREADY AND NOTHING

susan johnson - October 16, 2016 Reply

I cant take a photo of the entire receipt its to long , what do I do

    Eddy Salomon - October 17, 2016 Reply

With ibotta, they usually say take multiple pictures of the receipt as different sections.
But it may be different with Checkout51. The best thing to do is contact them directly about this.

Lu Ellen - October 13, 2016 Reply

Hello Eddy, I am writing because I live in Joliet, Illinois, and my question is, is there a certain name brand store to shop in with this company.

    Eddy Salomon - October 14, 2016 Reply

    Hey Lu,

I know with ibotta they only give you rewards on certain brands and some generic foods like milk or bread. But I’m not sure if Checkout51 is the same way. You might want to visit their website to dig deeper. But given a lot of the negative reviews, I might stick with iBotta at this point.

Angela - October 6, 2016 Reply

As far as I’m concerned Checkout 51 is a Scam. I have had nothing but trouble with it. Plus the said they would give me a 50 cent welcome bonus with my first receipt. Then they told me that they couldn’t read the receipt and so I re-submitted it but then said I turned it in to late. This is an on going thing with them. It’s more frustrating then the few dollars that you can make. IBotta is so much better, plus their customer service reps have been trained and they do listen. Sorry I had to put in my two cents worth.

    Eddy Salomon - October 6, 2016 Reply

Don’t be sorry that’s why I welcome feedback. You’re not the only one that has said that about Checkout 51. It sounds like they continue to be on the decline. I agree ibotta is still the best.

Alana - August 1, 2016 Reply

When I upload my recipe, does it have to be the same brand ?

    Eddy Salomon - August 1, 2016 Reply

I’m not sure. You should email Checkout 51 directly with this question.

John Haus - July 31, 2016 Reply

ibotta is way better… i just sent checkout 51 the same receipt twice and was denied do to their camera app.. i sent every section of the receipt and was still denied.. the sad part of that is it was for .75 cents as my ibotta for $4 was approved no problem.. checkout51 is a joke!!!!!!!!!!!

    Eddy Salomon - August 1, 2016 Reply

Sorry to hear about your experience with Checkout51. I wonder if many other people have the same issue or its just an isolated issue.

vanessa - July 12, 2016 Reply

So I’m currently driving around trying to find anyone that will cash my check I got from checkout 51,nobody will cash it

    Eddy Salomon - July 12, 2016 Reply

Why wouldn’t they cash it? It’s a normal check isn’t it? Are you going to reputable banks?

Tammy Salzano - June 18, 2016 Reply

Tried Checkout 51. Cashed in with $21.70!
Got check in about 7 days.. I like coupons and all the rebates. Makes shopping fun.

Ginny - June 16, 2016 Reply

Am I understanding this correctly? Do I buy what checkout 51 says to buy?

    Eddy Salomon - June 16, 2016 Reply

Ginny, sort of there are certain products that they list if you buy you’ll get rebates on. But you can continue to buy products you want but you may not get rebates on them if checkout51 doesn’t offer them. Ibotta is pretty cool in that they will pay you for buying generic products like milk, bread, etc. So that may be an option to explore as well.

Erin - May 29, 2016 Reply

Checkout 51 is legit, but it takes awhile to save a significant amount of money by using it. The Ibotta app is similar, but much better and the money adds up faster.

Carol - April 15, 2016 Reply

Thanks Eddy with a Y for the info. I loaded the app just yesterday and was wondering if it was legit before I proceeded further. Great article.

Thank you for this review of “checkout51” I am 70 years old and living on SS so I need as many resources to help compensate the SS income. I did not know that this was even out there so I will be searching for other opportunities to help get through the month. I generally shop just once a month is this still available if I only enter it once a month?
Thank You EDDY, Here’s to saving some money. God Bless.

    Eddy Salomon - March 30, 2016 Reply

    You’re welcome Heidi.
I don’t think it matters when you shop. As long as you do shop its an option that may help you. You may want to explore ibotta as well. And if you’re looking for other legitimate ways to earn a little extra income, check this out as well. I hope it helps.

I love check out 51 ! I haven’t cashed out yet but I am up to $40.00 and I plan to save all year until I reach at least a couple hundred 🙂 I am using the MONEY I saved using check out 51 to help buy something that is to expensive for me right now.

    Eddy Salomon - December 14, 2015 Reply

    Hey Coralee,

Glad to hear you like it. You might want to check out ibotta as well. But I like how you think. I tend to save the earnings from these little opportunities to buy bigger things or holiday gifts towards the end of the year. Because all this stuff does add up.

    Eddy Salomon - November 6, 2014 Reply

That’s weird Gary. I know some company can take up to 8 weeks to pay out. But I didn’t think that was the case with Checkout 51. And this is why I hate when companies pay by check. Keep me posted.

alis - August 22, 2014 Reply

Hey Eddy I was wondering if you really get paid $1 per lead is it true?

    Eddy Salomon - August 25, 2014 Reply

    Hi Alis,

Unfortunately Checkout51 doesn’t offer referral program. So no I don’t get paid any money for referring people to this opportunity. But I do for many of the other legitimate companies that I do recommend and review here. It’s how I make my money and have always been transparent about that. I even recommend a great community so others can learn to make money the same way I do. Hope this answers your question.

Dom Wells - May 3, 2014 Reply

What kind of cashback do you get based on how much you spent? Does it take a long time to actually earn a check?

    Eddy Salomon - May 3, 2014 Reply

    Hey Dom,

It all varies depending on the grocery item your purchasing. It’s like any company where it got be anything from $.50 to several dollars depending on the item.

I haven’t tried it yet so I don’t know if it would take long to earn or get your check. I imagine if you do a lot of grocery shopping every week and willing to purchase some of the items on their website, it shouldn’t take long to earn money with this.

    Dom Wells - May 3, 2014 Reply

Yeah that makes sense, I guess it is always worth checking out if you’re going to be doing shopping anyway, kinda like Swagbucks. Won’t make you rich, but could get you some extra pocket money without much extra effort.

    Eddy Salomon - May 3, 2014 Reply

Exactly Dom. That’s my big philosophy acquire multiple streams of income especially with activities you already do but don’t get paid for.

A few times a year, I’ve cashed out various amounts of money from these little opportunities that help purchase food, entertainment or even holiday gifts. So it does add up. Thanks for chiming in. It’s always good to hear from you!
