UserTesting Review: Get Paid To Test Websites or Scam?
This blog was designed with these recommended tools. We are proudly supported by affiliate links & sponsored ads that pay the bills.
But “Eddy with a y” only personally recommends companies I trust & researched.
The reality is we all seek some type of approval from others at one point in our lives. Well, the same goes for developers of websites, games and apps. That’s why companies like UserTesting.com pay people like you and I to test out these websites, apps or games and give feedback. You are probably wondering if this is actually a real thing and that’s probably why you are going through UserTesting reviews. Well, we’ve put the company to the test(Pun intended) and have everything you need to know in this UserTesting review.
What is UserTesting?
UserTesting found at www.usertesting.com is a usability testing website that claims to pay people like you and me to assist marketers, app, gaming and website developers test the user experience of their projects. UserTesting.com Inc. was co-founded by Darrell Benatar and Dave Garr in 2007 and is currently headquartered in 2072 Bayshore Parkway, Suite 703, Mountain View, CA 94043.
How Does UserTesting Work?
Developers want to know how their apps, game or website will behave before and after it’s rolled out to the general public. One way to do this is get random people online to try out these projects and report on their experience.
This is where UserTesting.com comes in to provide a platform where testers can try out these projects, report on their experience and then pay the testers for their time and feedback. Usertesting will then report back to the developers with this feedback.
What Do I Need To Get Started at UserTesting?
Before you even decide to join UserTesting, make sure you have, or can get the following
- A computer (MAC or Windows 7 and above)
- Fast and reliable internet
- A PC microphone
- Tablet or Smartphone (for mobile tests)
How Do I Join UserTesting?
Joining UserTesting is free. If you are above the age of 18 and your country accepts PayPal payment, you can go ahead and create an account.
Once you sign up as a Tester, you’ll then have to complete a short sample test.
If you pass the test they’ll send you an email confirming your successful registration, with a link to coninue the registration process.
Next, you’ll use the link on your email to continue with registration. The next step is to download a screen recorder from their website that UserTesting will use to record your sessions and upload it to their servers.
Once you have installed the screen recorder, set up your microphone and cleared your throat, go ahead and do the test. A test could be them asking you to visit a certain website and share your opinion of it out loud. They’ll then record your session and use it to judge whether you qualify to be a Tester or not.
If you pass the test you’ll get approved, and you can start earning money as a UserTesting.com Tester. They will then be sending you projects straight to your email when they become available. You can also download the UserTesting app to do tests that require a mobile device.
So obviously there are a lot of steps needed before you can make money with UserTesting.com. If you want to avoid these type of requirements and still make money, you can do that at sites like Swagbucks.com, Fusioncash.com or SurveyJunkie.com.
How Much Can I Make with UserTesting?
Each test you complete earns you a standard $10. There are however shorter tests that pay an average $3. UserTesting.com is upfront that it is not a get-rich-quick gig as projects can be limited at times, and they are sent based on your demographics. If you don’t like the idea that this may not be consistent income you can depend on, you can earn a part time or full time online with My Top Work At Home Recommendation.
How Long Does A Test Take To Complete?
A test consists of a 20 minute recording and answers to four follow-up written questions. So it takes about 20 minutes to complete a test for UserTesting.com.
How Does UserTesting Pay You?
UserTesting pays via PayPal only, and you’ll need to be in a country that accepts PayPal. You can expect the payment for a project 7 days from the time you did that specific project.
What We Like About UserTesting
Decent Pay For Your Time
They pay you $10 per test which is pretty generous. It also takes less than a minute to know whether you qualify to take a test, unlike survey websites where you can spend 10 minutes answering questions only to realize you don’t qualify to do the damn survey.
PayPal is convenient and available almost everywhere in the world, so again like other work at home gigs like Global Test Market, UserTesting has opened its doors to the rest of the world which is great.
So we've discussed all the positive things about UserTesting.com now it's time to discuss the complaints against UserTesting.com.
No BBB Profile
At the time of writing this review, UserTesting is not yet listed with the Better Business Bureau. So this may be a deal breaker for those of you that rely on these BBB ratings to determine legitimacy. I personally don't. But I'm a different dude.
Some users have claimed they worked but never got paid. This could be an anomaly or maybe there was some technical issues. I'm not sure if it's an ongoing issue. But it's worth noting.
Your rating affects your money
Here’s the thing. They will rate you based on the work you put in. A few bad ratings can affect the good ones. And since it seems the first thing they look at is your rating, you might end up not getting invites. Well, Boohoo! Sites like Swagbucks.com and Fusioncash.com don’t rate users, and you still make money.
You might not make money at all
Some applicants never got to do a single test for months. It seems they’ve let in more testers than they can assign tests to. Your demographics also affect the number of tests you qualify for, so it’s a toss of the dice really.

Is UserTesting A Scam or Legit?
UserTesting is not a scam from what we can tell. There are testimonials and proof of people earning from reliable sources online. However, your demographics determine how many tests you will qualify for so your income will be limited. But then again, they give you a heads up that you won’t be balling around town with your earnings as a tester. The lack of the BBB rating and the fact must have PayPal account may turn some off. All in all, it might pick a few lunch tabs a month, but don’t quit your day job.
