If you're anything like me you probably surf the internet a lot. You might be watching funny instagram videos. Or maybe you're on your favorite social media website debating politics or any other inappropriate topic your mom warned you against. Either way we all probably waste a lot of time online. Cross Media Panel formerly known as Screenwise Trends Panel, is a market research program that rewards you simply for surfing the internet. Cool, right? This research program is operated by Google and the objective is to get information to better understand how people access and use the Internet.

The app works on your computer, smartphone, or your tablet; whatever device you use to access the internet.
Just in case you are wondering, the app does not interfere with anything you do online, nor does it interfere with the functionality of your device.
While you do your thing online, the app runs quietly and efficiently in the background, collecting information regarding your online interactions and you get rewarded for this.
Sweet! The reward part that is.
How Much Money Do You Make?
Depends on how much surfing you do. The more you browse, the more rewards you earn. The more devices you use, the more you earn per week, and putting the app on three devices would earn you a signup bonus!
Rewards earned have no cash value until you redeem them. For your first reward redemption, you must have earned rewards worth $25.00 after which you can redeem rewards in increments of $5. But you don't get paid in actual cash, rather you redeem your rewards with e-gift cards at participating merchants such as Amazon.com, Nike, Home Depot, Gap, CVS, Hotels.com and a few more.
Once you've earned sufficient rewards, you'll see the gift cards you are eligible to redeem and you can make your choice. Once you've made your choice, you get an email with instructions so that you can redeem your e-gift directly from the merchant.
Additionally, from time to time you may also be offered other programs and surveys to participate in for more rewards.

What Are The Requirements to Join Cross Media Panel?

- You must live in the U.S.

Sounds easy enough but let's take a look at the good, the bad and the ugly. Yes, you read it right, the ugly.
Cross Media Panel Complaints
Now in theory all of this sounds good. But like any company there are definitely some downsides to Cross Media Panel that should be considered before you decide to join. So let's lay them out below so you can make an informed decision.
1. You have to browse to earn
Even though earning rewards for something you all ready do, sounds like a pretty good deal, if you don't do it, then you don't earn anything. Quite rightly, and that seems fair. 2. The rewards you earn certainly won't allow you to quit your day job that's for sure.
In all fairness, if you're looking for “beer money,” or a lil' something extra, then this is it.

3. It doesn't work on every device.
The app does not work on Blackberry or Windows mobile device. But honestly how many people still use those phones.
4. Lack of privacy
This is where it gets ugly and scary as I mentioned before. When you sign up to participate in Cross Media Panel, you are sharing every single bit of information regarding your web and mobile app usage with Google. The meter you downloaded on your device, collects and records everything you see on your screen, and everything you type, tap, swipe or input.
Everything! Is it really worth it? All of this information for “beer money?”
How smart does Google really need to be? Rockwell's song comes to mind, “I always feel like, somebody's watching me…, and I got no privacy.”
So is Cross Media Panel Legit & Safe?
Cross Media Panel is definitely legit and like I said, if you are okay with Google gathering information related to all that you and your household do online, then hey, it's cool. By all means, go for it, if you think the extra rewards are worth it. Don't let me harsh your mellow. You can sign up. But if you value your privacy, then this is NOT for you.
